A disconcerting woman...

A dubious legacy by Mary Wesley

The plot is located in the Second World War, specifically, in Egypt. The story tells about a young gentleman who lived in Egypt and married a divorced woman, Margaret, because his sick father tells him to do it. Afterwards, they settle down in a farm house where the story begins.

My writing is going to be about one of the main characters: Margaret, Henry's wife. During my lecture I had big and serious problems trying to understand this obscure character.

At the beginning of the plot any reader would have taught that she is a mad person and such a arrogant person because of her behaviour with Pilar, indeed, she was really haughty with her. How ever, since that scene, Margaret tries to be alone all the time, in her bedroom. Moreover, it is like she wants to be lonely, by her own, without anyone around her. Therefore, I found a little bit disconcerting this kind of behaviour coming from her.

What is more, in some way, Margaret and Henry are very distinct from each other. That is to say, Margaret represents an insecure world full of sadness and loneliness, nevertheless, Henry symbolizes a cheerful world without worries.

Astonishing but real...

"The Scarlet Letter2 by Nathaniel Howthorne is a novel which includes different genres like romance, fiction, mystery or even period drama. Furthermore, this "mixure" of genres makes this novel as interesting as surprising.

However, why is surprising? (althought the perfect word would be astonishing).
Answering the question: it is surprising because the novel reflects in an excellently manner the reality of the seventeenth-century where people were behind economically and socially. A society full with epocresy, egocentricity and prejudice, this advers facts are related with the plot of the novel.

On the one hand and without the shadow of a doubt, what really surprised me while I was reading the novel is how the townspeople were harsh on Hester Prynne - the protagonist - who was acused of adultery. What is more, as a punishment they made her wear a scarlet letter (the A of adultery) embroidered on her dress so the shame and guiltyness could follow her everywhere. Personally the only disgrace that I see here is the merciless way they treated her as if she was an animal without feelings. Nevertheless, I found astonishing the fact that they didn't acuse the man with who she made adultery, even though there were some characters who wanted to know about him.

On the other hand, in spite the fact that Hester Prynne sustained a lot due to the acusions and the prejudices by the townspeople, her personality took me unawares. She is such a strong and ingenious women and, indeed, a exalted mother (of Pearl).

Louisa Gradgrind from Hard Times by Charles Dickens

Louisa Gradgrind is Mr Gradgrind’s daughter and Tom Gradgrind’s sister of the Hard Times book by Charkes Dickens. I don’t know why I chose the character of Louisa but she got me quite curious about her personality. However, she is the only character of Hard Times that I found difficult to figure out her personality.

She’s that kind of person that makes you think if this kind of girls exist. Personally, I don’t think Louisa Gradgrind has a personality because she is influenced and damaged by her sever, soulless and serious father. Since her childhood until her adulthood she has been under the rules of her father, she didn’t have any choice of anything, let me tell you that she is the saddest character of the book. How ever, at the beginning I noticed that thanks to Sissy Jupe she was showing off her real personality, but her father didn’t let that to happen so she just turned to her cold and sullen personality.

Furthermore, she got married to an disgusting old man - a friend of her father- and they had such a loveless and cold relationship but as a said before, because of her father she didn’t know what feelings are so she didn’t even care about their relationship.
Moreover dear reader, if you thought that she had a horrible life then this will make you cry because Louisa Gradgrind dies, thank you Mr Charles Dickens, very kind.
Actually, she dies when she’s twenty years old (I know, very young) but, you know what?
I think that it’s a good thing because if you see how miserable her life was, the death could be the only “good” thing that happened to her.

To balance, I think that the character may represent the life of several girls of the 19th century so the character of Louisa fits perfectly in the story, don't forget that we are talking about Charles Dickens, an awesome writer!
